I recommend the 'Book of the New Sun' series by Gene Wolfe if you're into Martin's stuff. Or hell, anything by Gene Wolfe. Best writer of the 20th century IMO.

I just finished the newest Lost Series book that was only just released a couple weeks ago.
Even as (purposefully) slowly as I read those books, they're just too god damn short. But it's got the best space combat in any Sci-Fi book I've ever read.
